Design ***** Don Chadwick & Bill Stumpf In the 1970s, Herman Miller was deep into research in the field of ****** ergonomics and **** seating and challenged Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf to rethink traditional designs of ****** chairs. Their research produced the award-winning Ergon chair in 1976, and Equa chair in 1984. Building upon what they had learned, Stumpf and Chadwick began working in the early 1990s on a design for the world’s most comfortable ****** chair. Keeping in mind Charles Eames’ point that chairs should be designed for how people sit rather than how they should sit, they set about designing a chair that would: Promote the health of the person sitting in it Move and adjust as simply as possible Support a person in any position Really fit large or small people Be environmentally responsible. The result, Herman Miller Aeron Chair, was introduced in 1994 to immediate success and became an icon of contemporary design. It introduced the use of a semi-transparent mesh material called Pellicle, which allowed air to circulate against the sitter’s back, as well as conform to the shape and build of the user so that pressure on the impact areas is minimized. The visual transparency of the chair exemplified the idea of transparent architecture and technology, a design strategy dedicated to producing objects that would be less opaque and intrusive in the environment. Far ahead of its time in that it was composed of mostly recycled materials, the chair was engineered to be easily disassembled and recycled. Notable among the numerous design honors given to Chadwick and Stumpf during their careers was the inclusion of their revolutionary Aeron chair in the *** York Museum of Modern ***’s (MoMA) permanent collection.

It turns out the Aeron has a hate ****. My colleague Unmesh had the same unprintable comments about the pain in his thighs, apparently caused by the **** frame with what’s called a waterfall edge. My ******* George, a bond broker, says the mesh material I’d earlier thought so practical tears his pants. “The Aeron Chair Sucks” features hilarious videos of a worker’s battles with hers. To be fair, the dozens of heated comments on that site prove the Aeron still has a lot of defenders, too.

The Aeron was a throne perfectly tailored to Silicon Valley’s vanities. With a frame of high-tech molded plastic, a skin of woven plastic fibers pulled taut, and mechanics that accommodated slouchy rebels, the chair flattered the people who bought it. It was the **** engineering ***** could buy, and it seemed purpose-built for squeaky-voiced billionaires inventing the future in front of a computer. But the Aeron’s origin ***** isn’t so simple. The apotheosis of the ****** chair—and perhaps the only one ever to become a recognizable and coveted brand name among cubicle-dwellers—was actually the ********** fruit of a 10-year effort to create better furniture for the elderly.

Aeron chairs are produced by Herman Miller and were popular with web startups during the late 1990s, when they were associated with the dot-com bubble. A 2006 article in *** York magazine called the Aeron “the Dot-Com Throne”, writing that the chairs “became shorthand for the countless companies that didn’t have a clue how to make ***** on the Internet, but, man, did they have the know-how to set up a cool ******”. The Aerons were so popular that after the bubble burst, one commenter described the piles of unused chairs as reminiscent of a “corporate graveyard” of ****** furniture. The *** volume of sales led Herman Miller through the uncertainty following the bubble. As of 2016, Herman Miller had sold nearly 7 million units, and a *** unit was produced every 17 seconds.

The Aeron was the ***** thing I saw walking into my *** ******. At *****, I was dazzled by the **** of *** that is this most famous of ****** chairs (seriously, how many can you name by brand?). Its design is smooth yet innovative, its materials practical yet handsome. Sure, the Aeron defined the ’90s, but newsrooms aren’t known for cutting-edge cool. By our standards, it bespoke hip.

When the Aeron was finally done, Herman Miller’s executives had warmed to Stumpf and Chadwick’s problem-solving rigor, but remained leery about the chair’s ***** looks. They turned out to be a major selling point, making the chair seem incomparably advanced. One dealer in Hollywood, shortly after its unveiling in October of 1994, reported putting his ***** floor sample in the window, and hearing cars screech to a halt upon seeing it. By 1996, the orders were already dwarfing Herman Miller’s expectations. Pop culture had made it a phenomenon: Will, on Will and Grace, spent an entire episode trying to get an Aeron. Then the crash came. The dot-com-era profits helped keep Herman Miller alive in the early 2000s, and sales eventually bounced back. Nearly 7 million Aerons have been sold to date, and another one comes off of Herman Miller’s lines every 17 seconds.

Sitting expert A. C. Mandal has criticized the Aeron as “far too low” and not offering enough height adjustment and opportunities for the sitter to move. According to the chair’s co-designer Don Chadwick, the task given to him by Herman Miller was to update the company’s previous ****-seller, not to design the ideal chair for an eight-hour workday. “We were given a brief and basically told to design the next-generation ****** chair,” Chadwick said.
